From the GetYourGuide product pages, checked in October 2026. Ramfjordbotn lists 100 minutes for the guided tour and floating together, so the time in the water is shorter. The harbour float lists up to 1.5 hours in the water.
Floating is easy to do. What catches people out is the preparation.
The sequence is the same on every floating tour here. The details per operator come from the product pages.
Suit, layers and safety in more detail: how Arctic floating works.
The water is the same Arctic sea. The setting, the time it takes and what comes afterwards are not.
The practical side of floating in Arctic sea water, tour by tour.
Reviews from the tours that have them, including two critical ones: a small ice hole at the shore of Ramfjordbotn in February, and a harbour float with onlookers on the quay from a guest who had expected open sea. The sauna session has no reviews yet.
“It was the best experience we had in Tromso. The feeling of floating was so relaxing and therapeutic. With the suits you never felt cold. The best way to spend a morning.”
“We did this activity in March 2026. It was an incredible experience! […] we felt safety, even though not everyone in our group knew how to swim. We did the activity in the evening, in the dark, and it was very very funny, we laughed a lot. They took lots of pictures and videos for us […] and at the end we also received diplomas. The waffles with brunost and hot chocolate were super delicious! It is recommended to have extra clothes with you in case you get wet.”
“Very fun and super relaxing just floating! I was the only one who signed up for my time block but had a great host Mathieu and he kept me company and safe throughout the whole thing. The suits can be silly looking but it’s such a fun and unique experience. Would definitely do again!”
“The most amazing and incredible experience! we were also so lucky to float under the dancing northern lights!! Excellent and really helpful guide too. If you don't do this you've missed something really special - would 100% do this again.”
“I thought I could go out to sea to float, but it turned out I just got into the water at the city port and walked into the sea to float. During the process, I received stares and photos from everyone on the shore. Towards the end, it got very cold […]”
“We had actually thought there would be a large hole in the ice far out in the fjord. The reality was sobering. A small hole right on the shore. There was barely enough room for all the participants. […] It was quite fun, but for us, it wasn't worth the price.”

Floating listings show people smiling in orange suits. They say less about how long you are actually in the water, what you wear underneath, or whether a 140 kg guest or a seven-year-old can come. We read the product pages of every floating tour from Tromsø and put those details side by side. Where a page leaves something open, we say so. When you book through a link on this site, the booking platform pays us a small commission; it comes out of their margin, not out of your ticket price.
Not on the tours that say so. 10XNorth in Kaldfjord and the harbour float by Authentic North both state that no swimming skills are needed: the suit keeps you on the surface and you lie back in the water. The product pages for the Ramfjordbotn camp and the Kaldfjord sauna do not mention swimming, so ask the operator if a non-swimmer in your group is unsure.
Your own warm clothes. The suit goes on over them and keeps the sea out, but the warmth comes from the layers underneath. For the harbour float Authentic North recommends several layers, wool if possible, and hands out insulating overalls on very cold days. 10XNorth lists warm clothing for under the suit as something you bring yourself. Guests at the Ramfjordbotn camp write that they got a cotton overall to wear underneath.
Mostly not, but plan for it. 10XNorth writes that a little water can sometimes get into the suit and asks guests to bring a set of dry clothes, even though it has dryers at its base. Guests at the Ramfjordbotn camp report the same, while others stayed completely dry. Pack a change of clothes for every tour.
It depends on the tour. 10XNorth gives about 45 minutes of floating after a safety briefing of about 20 minutes. The harbour float lists up to 1.5 hours in the water after a 15-minute briefing. The Ramfjordbotn camp lists 100 minutes for the guided tour and floating together, followed by a break at the campfire. The Kaldfjord sauna does not state a floating time.
Each operator sets its own limits. Authentic North (Ramfjordbotn camp and harbour float) takes guests from 8 years, from 130 cm tall and up to 150 kg. 10XNorth takes guests between 35 and 135 kg and up to age 70, and turns away people with heart problems, high blood pressure, back problems, limited mobility or impaired hearing. The Kaldfjord sauna states no limits on its product page.
Sometimes, in late winter, but no tour can promise it. Authentic North writes that the fjord at its Ramfjordbotn camp freezes over from January to March, and guests who floated there in March and April describe ice floes and climbing onto the ice. 10XNorth says floating among ice is possible in Kaldfjord in winter too. In autumn and early winter you float in open water.
With luck. The Ramfjordbotn camp has night visits, 10XNorth runs evening departures from October to March, and the Kaldfjord sauna offers evening sessions in the aurora season. All of them depend on a dark, clear sky, and none of the operators guarantees a sighting.
Authentic North picks you up in the centre or at Tromsø Lodge & Camping and drives about 25 minutes to Ramfjordbotn. 10XNorth meets at the Magic Ice Bar on Kaigata and drives about 25 minutes to Kaldfjord. The harbour float starts at Søndre Tollbodgate 19 in the centre, with no drive at all. For the sauna at Ropnesvegen 82 on Kaldfjord you travel yourself; a transfer is only available for groups of 10 or more, at extra cost.
No. In Finnish Lapland, ice floating usually means lying in a hole cut into a frozen lake. Around Tromsø you float in the sea, in a fjord or the city harbour, mostly in open water; ice only forms in some winters and some places.
The current price of every tour is in the comparison table on this page. The price mostly follows the length of the outing and whether the drive out to the fjord is included.
