Arctic Floating with Snacks and Drinks, Ramfjordbotn
Getting there: Pickup in the centre, 25 min to Ramfjordbotn
Evening floats give you a chance of aurora, late winter a chance of ice. Neither is guaranteed, and here is what the operators and guests say.
Pick a day, or the first and last day of your stay in Tromsø. We check the booking calendar of each floating tour and list the ones that still have space on those dates, from the harbour float in town to the evening sessions out at the fjords.
Getting there: Pickup in the centre, 25 min to Ramfjordbotn
Getting there: Transport from Magic Ice Bar, 25 min to Kaldfjord
Own way to Kaldfjord
Two images sell Arctic floating: a person drifting under green northern lights, and a person lying between ice floes. Both happen, but only on some tours, in some months and with luck. Three tours from Tromsø offer an evening or night option; the harbour float runs in the dark winter afternoons as well but is not sold as an aurora tour.

Night visit with a chance of aurora, ice in late winter, campfire afterwards.
Authentic North picks you up in the centre of Tromsø or at Tromsø Lodge & Camping and drives you about 25 minutes to its floating camp in Ramfjordbotn, a cabin by the sea. There you climb into a rescue suit over your own warm clothes and float in the fjord with a guide. The programme gives 100 minutes for the guided part in the water.
Afterwards there is a campfire with coffee, tea and snacks, including pastries baked over the fire, and a certificate from the Arctic Ocean Floaters Club. You can choose a day visit or a night visit with a chance of northern lights. The operator writes that the fjord freezes over from January to March. Children under 8, anyone shorter than 130 cm and anyone over 150 kg cannot join.
Pickup in the city centre (Søndre Tollbodgate 11) or at Tromsø Lodge & Camping, then about 25 minutes by car to Ramfjordbotn.

Evening departures from October to March, transport from the Magic Ice Bar, waffles afterwards.
10XNorth meets you at the Magic Ice Bar on Kaigata and drives about 25 minutes to Kaldfjord. After a safety briefing of about 20 minutes you float for around 45 minutes in a neoprene survival suit. You do not need to be able to swim.
Towels, tea, coffee and freshly made Norwegian waffles are part of the trip, and so are the photos and videos the guides take and a diploma. Evening departures from October to March can bring northern lights. The operator says a little water can get into the suit, so bring dry clothes to change into. Anyone over 70, under 35 kg or over 135 kg cannot join, and neither can people with heart problems, high blood pressure, back problems or impaired hearing.
Magic Ice Bar, Kaigata 4, Tromsø. From there about 25 minutes by car to Kaldfjord.

Evening session in the aurora season, wooden sauna on the shore, own way there.
A floating session and a wooden sauna on the shore of Kaldfjord, at Ropnesvegen 82. You book floating only, sauna only or both together. The floating part comes with a flotation suit, a safety briefing and supervision by the staff. The sauna has panoramic windows facing the fjord and the mountains, and a towel is included.
You choose a day or an evening session; each booking is for a fixed time slot, not for the whole day. On dark evenings in the aurora season the northern lights can appear, though the operator does not promise them. Transport is not included: you get to Kaldfjord on your own, and groups of 10 or more can ask for a transfer at extra cost.

From the GetYourGuide product pages, checked in October 2026. Ramfjordbotn lists 100 minutes for the guided tour and floating together, so the time in the water is shorter. The harbour float lists up to 1.5 hours in the water.
10XNorth runs evening departures to Kaldfjord from October to March, with transport from the Magic Ice Bar. The Ramfjordbotn camp offers a night visit, and the floating and sauna session on Kaldfjord has evening slots in the aurora season. A guest at the camp in March floated under the northern lights; a guest at 10XNorth floated in the dark in March and remembers mainly laughing a lot. A February guest at the camp found the float underwhelming without an aurora. The lights need a dark, clear sky and some solar activity, and none of the operators promises them.
Authentic North writes that the fjord at its Ramfjordbotn camp freezes over from January to March. 10XNorth says that floating among ice is possible in Kaldfjord in winter too. Guests at the camp in March and April describe ice floes and being taken onto the ice; in February two guests describe a small hole cut in the ice right at the shore, crowded when the group was full, and one of them had hoped for a large hole far out on the fjord. A guest in late October found no ice at all. Before January, plan on open water.
In Finnish Lapland, ice floating usually means lying in a hole cut into a frozen lake. Around Tromsø you float in the sea, in a fjord or the city harbour, mostly in open water. Ice forms only in some places and some winters.
From roughly late November to mid-January the sun does not rise in Tromsø, and even daytime floats happen in blue twilight. From the end of March there is no real darkness until mid-September, and from roughly 19 May to 27 July the sun does not set, so evening floats in summer happen in daylight. The harbour float runs through all of it.
For the best chance of floating among ice, choose the Ramfjordbotn camp in late winter. For an evening float with transport from town, 10XNorth runs from October to March. With a car and a wish for a sauna afterwards, the evening session at the Kaldfjord sauna fits.
Luck shows in these reviews: one guest floated under the northern lights, others saw none, found a small ice hole at the shore in February, or open water in October.
“The most amazing and incredible experience! we were also so lucky to float under the dancing northern lights!! Excellent and really helpful guide too. If you don't do this you've missed something really special - would 100% do this again.”
“It was truly an unforgettable experience! As you slowly enter the water, you naturally float up, and the guide even took us onto the ice—it was incredibly fun!”
“We did this activity in March 2026. It was an incredible experience! […] we felt safety, even though not everyone in our group knew how to swim. We did the activity in the evening, in the dark, and it was very very funny, we laughed a lot. They took lots of pictures and videos for us […] and at the end we also received diplomas. The waffles with brunost and hot chocolate were super delicious! It is recommended to have extra clothes with you in case you get wet.”
“The Artic float was fine. It was fun but nothing spectacular. […] They cut a small hole in the ice and we floated right by the edge. […] After about 10 minutes, you're wondering what's next. I'm sure if the Northern Lights were to appear it would be amazing but we found it slightly underwhelming. The hosts were fabulous though.”
“We had actually thought there would be a large hole in the ice far out in the fjord. The reality was sobering. A small hole right on the shore. There was barely enough room for all the participants. […] It was quite fun, but for us, it wasn't worth the price.”
“We went at late October and the lake isn't frozen yet, that we are actually floating on a lake, if you are looking those icy vibes, better go during the winter times. However, hat's off for the guides, they are so friendly and professional […]”

10XNorth names October to March for its evening departures. The Ramfjordbotn camp has night visits and the Kaldfjord sauna evening sessions in the aurora season. A sighting depends on a dark, clear sky and is never guaranteed.
Authentic North writes that the fjord at its camp freezes over from January to March, and 10XNorth says ice is possible in Kaldfjord in winter. Guests found ice in February, March and April, and none in late October.
Outside the ice season, in open water. When the fjord at Ramfjordbotn is frozen, guests describe floating at a hole cut by the shore and among ice floes in early spring.
No. It runs all year, in the polar night too, but the operator does not sell it for the northern lights, and the city lights are close.
